AVI50222 Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane)

Course Overview

This qualification reflects the roles of flight crew personnel performing normal and emergency commercial pilot duties in support of commercial or Defence aviation flight operations.

Flight crew duties include applying technical and non-technical aviation skills and knowledge to a wide range of air transport operations, including passenger, charter and cargo operations.

Individuals working at this level will apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, judgement and defined responsibility in known or changing contexts and within broad but established parameters.

This qualification forms some of the requirements for certification as a commercial pilot by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as directed by Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) Part 61 Flight crew licensing. 

People seeking certification should check these requirements with CASA.


Course Content

This course is full-time, delivered over 50 weeks, comprising of 29 units of competency and 150 hours of practical flight training. 

Students are expected to undertake additional personal study to complete the course requirements.

  • 28 core units.
  • 1  general elective unit from the general elective units. The general elective unit must contribute to the vocational outcomes of the qualification.


Delivery & Assessment

The course runs five (5) days a week. 

Flying days are scheduled on a regular basis allowing for weather etc.  A typical flying day consists of a pre-flight briefing, flight and a post-flight debrief.


Course Outcomes

On successful completion of all course requirements and assessments, learners will be issued with a

 

  • AVI50222 Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) 


Location

Delivered in the workplace and via supported online/face-to-face training


Course Duration

Typically, 12 - 24 months depending on prior experience, unit selection, and workplace arrangements


Course Fees

Fees for this course are set out in our Schedule of Fees and Charges, provided with the enrolment package and available on our website.

Course fees cover the cost of the following:

  • tuition – theory and practical (including      aeronautical experience of up to 150 hours)
  • CASA English Language Proficiency (ELP) test  (initial)
  • commercial Pilot Licence CASA Flight Test (initial)


Courses fees do not include the cost of the below items required for this course:

  • Aviation Class 1 Medical
  • Aviation Security ID Card (ASIC)
  • closed-in shoes (not steel caps)
  • personal headset and equipment
  • textbooks, charts, and maps
  • CASA examination fees – prices vary depending on      the examination; please contact CASA for more information.

Additional fees may apply if extra flying hours are required to achieve the standard Commercial Pilot Licence.


Entry Requirement

Commercial or military pilot entrants to this qualification should check requirements with CASA or Defence Aviation for specific pilot entry standards.


The following are the mandatory entry requirements for enrolment in this course. Prospective students must:

  • have an Aviation Reference Number (ARN)
  • produce evidence of a current Aviation Class 1 Medical
  • be in possession of, or in the process of applying for a current Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) for flight crew by your first census date
  • Language, Literacy & Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND): Participants must demonstrate appropriate LLND skills to meet course and workplace requirements (assessment conducted prior to enrolment).
  • be eligible to obtain English Language Proficiency to meet the minimum requirements set by CASA
  • be a minimum of 18 years of age prior to the completion of the course to enrol in the qualification.
  • have completed Year 12 (or equivalent)


Confirmations

A student’s position on the course will only be confirmed upon a completed enrolment form and the payment of your basic course fee and Core Skills Assessment. 

Numbers are limited, so confirmed enrolments will only be able to attend on the day of training.


Learner Requirement

  • Have a valid Photo ID. (i.e. Australian Drivers Licence, Passport or Proof of Age Card). Mandatory for accredited courses.
  • Must have a valid USI to be issued the Statement of Attainment.
